Alice Harding Paeonies often known as the 'king' of flowers by admiring gardeners for their 'regal' blooms are easy to grow, and a fine addition to any garden. They have been favourites of European royalty since their introduction in the 18 th century, and Chinese emperors for at least 1500 years (also used in Chinese medicine).

Watering
Most people have trouble with their Paeonies when they over-water them; simply water when the soil feels dry.

Climate
Tree Paeonies come from the mountains of China and Tibet. This means that for your Paeony to flower your climate needs to reach a minimum winter temperature of about 10C. Ideally you should experience a couple of winter frosts.

Positioning

SouvineirPosition your Tree Paeony in a full sun to part shade section of your garden. If your Paeony has faded flowers then it needs more shade. A well-drained position is essential as Tree Paeonies are prone to root rot. Good drainage can be achieved by planting your Paeony in a raised garden bed, or on a slope. Ideally, position your Paeony where there is good air circulation, as this helps to prevent fungal disease (treat any fungal disease with a copper based spray). Your Tree Paeony can also be grown in a pot.

Soil
The soil PH should be from 6 to 7.5. The soil should be well draining.

Feeding
Feed with 1 PART blood and bone or well-rotted manure and 2 PARTS Dolomite lime every autumn and spring. Anzac Day and Rememberance Day.

Anything else?
Your Paeony (depending on the type) should flower between September and late November. Tree Paeonies are deciduous. This means your Paeony will lose its leaves in late autumn. The main reason Paeonies die is because of too much water or bad drainage. The best time to plant or divide tree paeonies is from late April to mid June.

Tree Paeony: Ettiene de France

Big ol tree paeony

Tree Paeonies are slow growing woody shrubs. I estimate that this fine example of Ettiene de France has been growing in this position for at least forty years.
